DAVAO CITY – An official of the Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (Smaardec) vowed to work for stronger partnership as contributor to the country’s economic growth.
Dr. Lourdes Generalao, Smaardec Research Development Council chair and president of the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep), said Smaardec has flourished into an influential development community over the years and contributed growth in agriculture, fishery and aquatic industry in Davao Region.
She was thankful that the consortium continues to collaborate and has been instrumental in successful research and development projects.
During the Smaardec’s 3oth founding anniversary at the Abreza Mall Wednesday, Generalao cited successful projects like a modest Project Bitaugan in Davao Oriental, the conduct of a policy land use conversion, research and development for three big ticket projects in Davao Region, and the science and technology to fight the dreaded fusarium disease in banana farms.
Smaardec, through the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) was supported the rehabilitation of the areas hit by typhoon Pablo in 2012 and a sugar technology training spearheaded by Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (Spamast).
Smaardec is a research and development organization supporting agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources sectors. From nine member-consortiums, it has grown to 25 multidisciplinary member-agencies.
Smaardec is primarily engaged in knowledge and technology generation, research and development results utilization/technology transfer, capability building and governance, and policy advocacy for science and technology development.
Generalao said Smaardec's Farms and Industry Encounters through Science and Technology Agenda (Fiesta) should serve as an avenue for the farmers, agencies to exchange ideas and strengthen partnership. Fiesta make use of the festive mode usually associated with fiesta celebration to display the finest results of research and development initiatives and other priority agricultural products and related value-adding initiatives.
She reminded that research and development is the backbone of the consortium.
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who was represented by Councilor Marissa Abella, recognizes the role of Smaardec in bringing improvements to farm production.
Duterte-Carpio was hopeful that Smaardec would continue help address the needs of farmers in terms of increasing farm productions and their enhance competency. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
