Deputy Presidential Spokesman Anthony Golez on Sunday night said that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was briefly in St Luke's Hospital “for a checkup due to symptoms of apparent pharyngitis."
“The illness may be due to her hectic schedule in Europe and Kuwait. She is now well and back in the Palace," Golez said.
Radio dzBB reported that Mrs Arroyo arrived past 7 p.m. but left before 9:30 p.m. in a presidential convoy. Presidential guards also pulled out of the hospital.
Earlier, security was tightened at the hospital as presidential guards set up an inspection area near the lobby. The presidential guards brought K-9 units to sniff out weapons or explosives.
Mrs Arroyo suffered from a sore throat Friday while delivering a speech. Presidential Management Staff head Cerge Remonde said Saturday he had advised her to take things easy.
Remonde told government radio Saturday that Mrs Arroyo may be suffering from fatigue as she had just come from a weeklong trip to Europe and a sudden side trip to Kuwait to plead for the life of worker Marilou Ranario.
