GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The provincial government of South Cotabato is targeting another record year for mining and quarry tax revenues as it posted total collections of around P11.2 million in the first seven months of the year.
Siegfred Flaviano, Provincial Environment Management Office (Pemo) head, said Thursday their collections from January to July was slightly higher than the recorded figures in the same period last year that reached a monthly average of P1.56 million.
During the first six months, he said their average monthly collection was at P1.59 million and the actual collection in July reached P1.66 million.
“Our recorded collections increased steadily since January and we’re now on track to surpass our total revenues last year,” Flaviano said in a statement.
A report released by Pemo showed that the province’s total receipts from sand, gravel and mining taxes reached a total of P11,247,158.82 from January to July.
The provincial government’s share from the quarry and mining tax collections has so far reached P4,424,274.41.
The provincial imposition under quarry and mining covers sand and gravel tax, mining tax, mining permit fee, ore transport fee, occupational mining tax, verification fee, filing fee, permit fee, projection fee, processing fee, fines/penalties/surcharges, and miscellaneous (delivery receipts).
Last year, the province’s mining and quarry tax collections reached an “all-time high” of P18.743,092.83.
Pemo said such figure was the highest since the creation of their office in 2007. The previous record was P15,790,315.30 generated in 2012.
Flaviano attributed their improved collection performance to their intensified monitoring and enforcement activities against illegal quarry and mining operations in the province.
He said they have been regularly checking the operations various quarry and small-scale mining ventures to ensure that they are compliant with the local government’s regulations.
The provincial government has made strides these past years in terms of the regulation of small-scale mining activities in the province due to the implementation of its “MinahangBayanihan” program in the gold rush town of T’boli.
The program mainly aims to promote sustainable small-scale mining by responding to current issues and concerns affecting the sector as well as the integration and convergence of good governance practices.(AVE/PNA)
