Lumad family to represent Davao in 'Huwaran' search
« on: May 07, 2020, 07:34:40 PM »
DAVAO CITY – A family from a Mansaka tribe from Davao del Norte will represent the region in the national search for Huwarang Pamilya organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Couple Ian and Grace Betua, who serviws the lumad community in Balaguran, Sto Tomas town, is already the regional winner in the competition as DSWD’s recognition of the beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

The couple is recognized for their voluntary service advocating cleanliness in the community. Grace said her husband, who works with the Tagum Agricultural Development Company (TADECO), helps whenever he is free from work.

Grace said Ian is supporting her advocacy program and understands her community work. The couple has a daughter who is already in Grade 9.

DSWD XI Director Mercedita Jabagat said the search for Huwarang Pamilya is aimed at recognizing family-beneficiaries of the 4Ps who maintain strong family ties, demonstrate positive Filipino values and have good positive impact in the community where they reside.

Also representing the region is Kenneth Bardinas, the regional exemplary child winner. Bardinas, who is from Dujali, Davao del Norte, was a finalist in The Voice under the team of coach Bamboo.

Jabagat said Bardinas has a good scholastic record and attends school regularly despite the family’s economic condition. Bardinas has never been a repeater in school.

Jabagat said the Pantawid Pamilya children beneficiaries were judged according to their performance in school including in extra-curricular activities, talent, good moral character, no indicator of behavioural problems, among others.

Bardinas took home P20,000 as a regional winner in the search for exemplary children of Pantawid Pamilya 2017.

The Betua and the Bardinas families are only among the 260,946 household beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT). Of the total number, 231,831 are beneficiaries of the regular CCT and 29,115 beneficiaries of the modified CCT for Indigenous Peoples in Davao Region.

By province, Compostela Valley has 62,809 household beneficiaries; Davao del Norte – 58,654; Davao Oriental – 40,890; Davao Occidental – 34,617; Davao del Sur – 30,750; and, Davao City has 33,226.

Jabagat said that as of the last generation from the Pantawid database on September 6, 2017, there is a decrease of 124 households from August 2017 primarily due to the deactivation of the beneficiaries as they are no longer eligible members.

Jabagat, however, said this number is still subject to further verification. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
