A couple in Singapore are taking turns in serving jail sentences for abusing their Filipino household helper.
Singapore Straits Times reported on Wednesday that Thya Meng Hong, 42, a senior planner, will start serving her two-week sentence on Monday for hitting her 24-year-old Filipino helper with a cane and pinching her on her arms.
Thya’s husband has just completed a three-week jail term for molesting the same helper at their Paya Leybar Road last November.
The helper began working at the couple’s home in October.
The report said she was in the kitchen when the couple’s five-year-old son asked her to write some numbers in his notebook. The boy cried when the maid said she was busy. But then, she had no choice but to oblige.
When the wife saw the helper writing in her son’s notebook, she asked angrily why she was doing so and why the boy was crying.
When the helper told her the boy asked her to write something because he was lazy, the wife became angrier, prompting her to hit the helper with a cane then pinched her on her arms.
The helper reported about the abuse to the police two days later. - GMANews.TV
