Former Senator Leila de Lima was taken hostage briefly on Sunday morning by three prisoners under police custody (PUPC) who are members of the Abu Sayyaf Group, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said.
The PUPCs first stabbed a police officer who is now in critical condition, Azurin said in an interview with Super Radyo dzBB.
The PNP chief added that the suspects tried to escape but they were later on neutralized. Azurin said de Lima is “safe” and is currently being checked at a hospital.
