Around 25 families living along the banks of the Siaton River and the Canaway River in Siaton, Negros Oriental were evacuated to safer grounds on Monday evening following flashfloods spurred by torrential rains that caused the rivers to overflow.

Angelo Tiongson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) confirmed that the families opted for a pre-emptive evacuation after the rivers overflowed and started seeping in to the doorways of their houses.

The families stayed overnight at the town gymnasium and returned early Tuesday to their homes after authorities declared it safe for them, said Tiongson.

Capitol, through the PDRRMC, sent Tuesday morning food packs for the evacuees, Tiongson added.

Heavy and continuous rains over the past days had triggered flooding in some areas in Negros Oriental in recent days as Typhoon “Lawin” entered the Philippine area of responsibility.

Tiongson said Governor Roel Degamo has given a standing order for deputized disaster risk reduction and management officers in the different towns and cities of Negros Oriental to be vigilant at all times.

He said local government units must actively participate in disaster response and undertake mitigating measures as well to prevent the loss of lives and damage to property.

Meanwhile, the body of 29-year old Reynaldo Saguban Adaya, a resident of the sub-village of Sto. Niño in Barangay San Pedro, Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, was found along the shore of the town last Thursday after he drowned in floodwater when he crossed a bridge apparently while under the influence of liquor.

Romans 10:9-10
"If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."
