CITY GOV’T KICKS-OFF MONTH-LONG 2023 SANGYAW FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES
A motorcade and a program at the Leyte Park hotel grounds today, June 1, will formally kick off activities for the month-long 2023 Sangyaw Festival activities in honor of Señor Sto. Niño. The motorcade of the city government will start at 3:00 p.m. and will pass through the city's major streets.
The opening ceremony of Sangyawan Park at the Leyte Park hotel grounds will follow shortly after the motorcade. The erstwhile hotel's grounds will serve as the center of Sangyawan activities this year, which include nightly band shows, a trade fair, a carnival, and other live performances.
Among the main events of this year’s festivities is the Sangyaw Parade of Lights on June 29. The Parade of Lights features creatively decorated and brightly lit floats and dance contingents against the backdrop of the upbeat “Sangyaw Theme."
Other highlights are the Miss Tacloban Coronation Night on June 24 at the Tacloban City Convention Center, the Ginoong Sangyaw on June 22 at the Robinsons North Activity Area, and Balik Tacloban Night at Pacific Point Resort on June 27, among others.
Among the sports events in this year's Sangyaw Festival are the Sangyaw Adventure Race on June 16–17 and the Sangyaw Off-road Challenge (June 17).
Religious Activities for the 134th Tacloban Fiesta include the Pre-Balyuan Rites on June 18 and the 48th Balyuan Rites on June 20, the traditional Fluvial and Land Processions, and Pontifical Mass on Fiesta Day, June 30.
The Sangyaw Festival is the official festival of the highly urbanized city of Tacloban, revived in 2008 by Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez. “Sangyaw” means to announce an important news.
