The government is setting its sights on big spenders from Russia and other European countries to boost the country’s tourism.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said his department will be participating in two travel fairs in Moscow, Russia this week in an effort to lure high-end tourists.

“We see the Russian Federation and the neighboring states becoming fastest-growing source countries within the next two years, thus the DOT has been busy collaborating with our partners in the private sector as well as Russian tourism officials to reach this goal,” Durano said.

DOT data showed that visitor arrivals from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States from January to July 2007 grew 11.5 percent over the same period last year, making it the country’s sixth biggest source of tourists from the European region.

Durano said he will be leading a 56-member delegation that will showcase the country’s nature and adventure attractions at the Otdykh-Leisure 2007, which is expected to be participated in by more than 68 countries.

According to Durano, with the help of the private sector, the Department of Tourism (DOT) will promote leisure and business destinations in the country through a booth to be fitted with a mini-kitchen and bar where visitors will be treated to Filipino food.

Members of the internationally recognized and multi-awarded Bayanihan national folk dance company will regale guests with songs and dance performances reflecting the country’s rich and colorful culture
