Ernesto Zambo and his wife were shooting birds inside their compound in Alang-Alang, Mandaue City Friday afternoon when she accidentally shot him with an air rifle.
Ernesto Zambo, 66, an uncle of Cebu Provincial Board (PB) Member Ian Zambo, died the following day at the Chong Hua Hospital in this city Saturday afternoon.
Police Insp. Ramil Morpos, who led a team from the Mandaue City Police Office to investigate the incident at the Zambo compound on G. Ouano St., Alang-Alang, said Zambo was accidentally shot by his wife, Tita, 47.
Relatives of the victim, including PB Member Zambo, told the police that around 5:20 p.m. last Friday, the victim’s wife, Tita, was loading the air gun when it accidentally went off, hitting her husband, who was passing in front of her, in the abdomen.
The victim’s wife immediately called the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf), which rushed Zambo to the Chong Hua Hospital here.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, Zambo was declared dead by attending physicians.
Morpos, a member of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch (IDMB), said Zambo and his wife run a handicraft business.
Morpos said the family decided not to report the incident to the police, believing that Zambo, who underwent an operation, would be fine.
â€They didn’t expect he would die,†Morpos said.
The victim’s eldest son surrendered the air gun to IDMB personnel.
Morpos said the family failed to show a permit to carry the air gun, which they said was owned by the victim.
He will check with the Firearms, Explosives Security Agencies, and Guards Supervisory Section to see if the air gun is licensed.
Morpos said it is illegal to hunt birds in the country. But they did not see any dead bird when they went to the compound.
