ILOILO CITY – The Palm Concepcion Power Corp. (PCPC) assured the safety of residents living near its 135-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Concepcion, Iloilo, as it undergoes a one-month preventive maintenance.
In a press conference Thursday, provincial administrator Raul Banias said people living near the power plant are all safe after they were evacuated on the night of Oct. 29 following a sudden outflow of ash in one of the plant's chambers.
“But they have cleared up immediately,” he said of the ash.
Banias also assured that all the evacuees were not hurt or harmed.
In an official statement released Thursday, PCPC said the incident caused “ash clouding due to the very light weight of the ash, mistaken as smoke coming from the plant.”
“To ensure the safety of residents near the plant, they were immediately evacuated by the municipal responders and attended to by PCPC representatives and municipal health workers,” said Ma. Christina Cabalhin, PCPC vice president for corporate affairs.
Based on the report of the municipal health office, the evacuees were immediately attended to, to make sure that they are in good condition. They were already sent home the next day, safe and unharmed.
In a previous interview with Cabalhin, she said the power plant was shut down for preventive maintenance to improve its operations. (PNA)
