ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has called on Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) to register in order for them to avail of the benefits they are entitled under the law.
CSWDO Chief Ma. Socorro Rojas on Monday made the call following observation and reports that not all PWDs in this city are registered with her office.
Rojas disclosed that records of her office showed there are 3,300 registered PWDs in this city although the number could be higher.
Republic Act 7277 otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons defines PWDs as “those suffering from restriction of different abilities, as a result of a mental, physical or sensory impairment, to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being.”
Rojas said that the PWDs are entitled to a 20 percent discount in purchasing medicine, medical care and dental services as well as purchases from food and billeting establishments.
She said they are also entitled to a five percent discount in the purchase of basic commodities, as well as household products.
But she said they must be registered with her office so that they can be issued identification card to avail all of the benefits specified under the law.
She said they could also avail of the government’s livelihood programs for PWDs once they are registered with the CSWDO. (PNA)
