Public High School Students to Start Learning Spanish
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:37:06 AM »
SPANISH will be taught in selected public high schools starting next school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced.

The teaching of Spanish is aimed at preparing Filipino graduates for the global market.

DepEd has decided to start the program with one school per region.

Only two classes of 35 students in each school will be offered the language class.

The subject will be offered as an elective, or students who show competence in English can enroll in the course.

Earlier, DepEd 7 Director Recaredo Borgonia said only students who excelled in English and Filipino are expected to also perform well in Spanish.

“We cannot make it a requirement for all the students to take up Spanish. If the student doesn’t perform well in English or Filipino, you can’t expect them to do well in Spanish. So it is better that it is just an elective, for the students to decide,” said Borgonia.

Special

The Special Program in Foreign Language aims to develop in the students skills in listening, reading, writing, speaking and viewing—qualities that are important for the
development and acquisition of communication skills through a second foreign language.

The program also seeks to broaden the cultural horizon of the students.

“It will also develop understanding and appreciation of other people’s cultures,” Education Sec. Jesli Lapus said in a statement.

For each region, only secondary schools with the highest mean percentage score in English would be selected for the program.

Crash course

“One of the criteria in selecting the teachers who will handle the teaching of the foreign language is that they must be willing to finish the crash course and participate in teaching Spanish,” Lapus said.

The teachers will undergo a three-month training for the program. The selected schools will also be required to provide substitute teachers who will take over while other teachers are in training.

DepEd will choose the schools based on the availability of classrooms and support facilities. The school has to have a computer laboratory with at least 10 computers and headsets. (EPB

Spanish because it is a major language; and shall open Filipinos in dealing with Latin America in trade/business.

Reconnecting with our past. 100 years ago, all Filipinos knew how to read, and speak in Spanish.

Bem, you're already using some spanish. "Pero"

:P

If you know Spanish, you will know the basis of French. As both languages are Romantic languages. I'm fairly versed in Castillian Spanish, and though I've never taken a class in French in my life, I can make out what French speakers say.

If you know Spanish, you'll know Portuguese, have an understanding of French and Italian.

Correct si Ate Belle, diba Ate Belle there is a need in Nurses who speak or understand Spanish?

When I was in High School, Bem, we were given electives of Spanish, French, German, Latin and Chinese. Pero majority of students preferred to enroll in Spanish. Ang reason ani is because there is an estimated 25-30 million Spanish speakers living in the US.

Philippines is a growing economic power, with it introducing Spanish in high schools, proficiency in the language will grow.

And a market in Latin America will be open for Filipinos.

The growing markets of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Beliz, Cuba, and Spain will be open to the Philippines.

Implementation of this language will bring more options for The Philippines. The country is too dependent on China, and the US as it is. Perhaps it will better suite the Republic with increased trade and relations with the Latin World/Markets.

Verdad.

Public lang ba? How about the private high schools? Nakakahiya naman kung one day magkita ang isang public high school student and a private one and  mag spanish ang public higschool student bigla. Hahahaha!!! I'm not saying na dahil private ang isang student ay dapat siya ang lamang. It is just na alam natin na mas mahal ang tuition fees ang mga private schools and di man lang makaka sagot ang isang private school student if it is in spanish?

I learned spanish during my rizal days in college, and it was one hell of a year for me. Hehehehe lalo na when my teacher asked me to recite the el felebus turismo  & the La solidaridad in spanish.

I think it would be very helpful kung highschool palang sila a maturuan na sila ng spanish.

Super Balita Cebu
(Pebrero 3, 2009 isyu)

Wa man gamita ang ilang pagkabrayt. O duna ba kahay laing nagpahipi nga katarungan?.

Since globalization is now almost encompassing the whole world, every country is now in dire need in bracing themselves for the possible competition and preparedness. The Philippines is one of the many countries that look at the language aspect as the best tool to counter possible barriers of global communication. Other Asian countries are speeding up teaching their people English language as a first step, knowing that it is internationally spoken. Koreans for one are seeking for Filipino English tutors thru on-line interaction, di ba? We are leaping ahead of them by reviving Spanish language as an elective subject in public high school under the presumption that Filipinos are literally English speaking people or English is our second language.

Sa una, when Spanish subject was still part of an introductory subject in fourth year curriculum, students never realize the importance of the language. Some said, it was intended for those who wanted to pursue courses in Law, Medicine, and Seminary. Others, saw it as a preparation to would be historians of Rizal to grasp full understanding of the writings of Rizal in Spanish. There was no inkling or trace that globalization will come our way that the importance of the language is realized as an essential factor.

Gullas welcomes move to promote Spanish
Updated February 05, 2009 12:00 AM

Cebu first district Representative Eduardo Gullas welcomed the move of the Department of Education (DepEd) to promote the learning of the Spanish language in selected public high schools starting June.

Gullas, whose family owns the University of the Visayas which is one of the largest universities in Cebu, said the move is a positive step toward encouraging secondary students to learn not just Spanish but other foreign languages as well when they proceed to college.

“This is all about making our school programs more relevant and highly responsive to the changing times - to globalization and to the demands of labor markets here and abroad,” Gullas said.

He said that college graduates with extra foreign language skills could look forward to gainful employment in international institutions, multinational corporations, the diplomatic offices of other governments, and even in non-government aid organizations.

The lawmaker, one of the principal authors of a bill seeking to reinforce the use of English in schools, said students could also count on high-paying jobs in the country’s Foreign Service or in the business process outsourcing industry.

He cited some of the firms aggressively recruiting local staff that can speak English and at least one other foreign language.

DepEd’s Special Program in Foreign Language is designed for students who have shown competence in English and the ability to learn another foreign language.

The new program would initially offer Spanish in one pilot school per region. Each school would have two classes of 35 students per class. — Garry B. Lao/LP

Spanish is one of our 3 official languages, the other two is english and tagalog. We put  so much emphasis on these 2 foreign languages which left our tagalog out. It is a shame that our national tongue is not proficiently spoken nationwide.
