MANILA – President Rodrigo R. Duterte's decision to extend the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and some areas in the country involved thorough thinking and consultation, a prelate said Friday.
“I am sure that it was a well-thought decision after consulting some important government agencies,” Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco said in a statement.
Ongtioco said he is convinced that the decision is for the "good and safety of the people".
Meanwhile, a Manila priest said the government should have a plan to ensure that the people would not go hungry during the quarantine period.
“By deciding to extend it, the government should better be ready with stimulus packages that will keep the people from hunger and the adverse effects of isolation,” said Fr. Jerome Secillano of the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Parish in Sampaloc, Manila.
Secillano said if people are assured of aid and wages even without working, their burden would be less.
On Friday, Duterte announced that the ECQ, which was originally set to end on April 30, has been extended to two more weeks or until May 15 in Metro Manila, Benguet, Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Albay, Catanduanes, Davao del Norte, and Davao City.
The ECQ was implemented in Luzon to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). (PNA)
