MANILA, Philippines - A Filipina is now in jail in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia after airport authorities found 2.5 kilos of the illegal drug "shabu" in her luggage.
Another Filipino who was picking her up from the airport was also detained by the police.
Vice Consul RJ Sumague of the Consulate General ng Jeddah said the Filipina was returning from a vacation in the Philippines last February 2 when she was arrested at the airport.
Sumague said "shabu", the illegal drug methamphetamine hydrochloride, was found in three boxes of "tikoy". "Tikoy" is a glutinous rice delicacy usually served in the Philippines during the Lunar New Year.
According to the Filipina who talked to a consulate official, a friend had asked her to bring the "tikoy" boxes to Jeddah. The friend was the same person who was picking her up at the airport.
However, the friend had allegedly denied he asked the Filipina to bring the "tikoy" boxes.
The two OFWs are currently in jail in Jeddah as the investigation continues.
The consulate said the two OFWs may face the death penalty for bringing illegal drugs. - Report from Charles Tabbu, ABS-CBN
