A recruitment industry leader on Monday encouraged high school graduates to consider taking up technical-vocational courses, as he stressed the high demand in the global labor market for skilled construction and manufacturing workers.
Lito Soriano, president of LBS E-Recruitment Solutions and one who finished vocational education and rose to become one of the recruitment industry’s acknowledged consultants, pressed his call for high school graduates of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to shift their college aspirations to vocational courses rather than taking on the usual courses in diploma mills and after graduating only to join the millions of jobless college graduates.
“I am urging high school students to look into the “wave of the future - overseas jobs with high pay for skilled construction and manufacturing workers. I want to call on all high school students especially children of OFWs to carefully rate and study the performance of the school they want to enroll and spend their limited family income.
"Does the school’s graduates find jobs after graduation? Does the school assist its graduates in getting jobs or will they after graduation join the millions of educated jobless?†he said.
Soriano noted that a college or university education does not guarantee employment, adding that college graduates find themselves in odd jobs in call centers, malls, fast foods outlets and factory workers.
Foreign businessmen echoed the need to shift to technical-vocational curriculum.
Henry Schumacher, executive vice-president of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), said greater effort from both the government and the private sector is needed to narrow the gap between what companies need and what schools provide.
“We should always look at opportunities to narrow this gap. We need to improve the educational system and influence schools to improve their curricula,†he said.
Schumacher said another challenge to employment is convincing parents that
young Filipinos don’t need a college degree to get a decent-paying job, as well as convincing employers to stop looking for college diplomas when hiring people.
