LAOAG CITY — About 68 students from the Tanap Elementary School in Burgos town of Ilocos Norte, about 55 kilometers from this city, are the latest recipient of a rainwater harvesting tank courtesy of the Lopez-led Energy Development Corporation, owner of the largest wind power farm in Southeast Asia.
A rainwater harvesting tank is a low-cost rainwater harvesting technology using ferro cement construction technique.
The school donation also comes with an iron removal filter and a bio sand filter, enabling harvested rainwater to be used for cooking and safe drinking.
Using simple technology, the water is filtered through a facility that removes sediments like iron, harmful bacteria and odor that may be detrimental to the consumer’s health.
School principal Corazon Guiaya relayed that schools in the highlands have difficulty getting water during the months of February to May. Hence, the installation of a rainwater harvester which is just enough to supply the needs of the school is very essential.
Before the rainwater harvester was installed, Guiaya said teachers and students had to seek the services of a water station supplier.
To date, other highland schools in Burgos town are also considering adopting said technology to save on utility costs and to allow students to have access to safe drinnking water.
As part of the EDC’s corporate social responsibility project, some schools and villages in Burgos town are the latest recipients of various health and sanitation projects of the company which maintains a 150-megawatt wind and solar power farm in Burgos town. One of these is the installation of rainwater harvesting tank. (PNA)
