ILOILO CITY - - The two power firms operating coal-fired power plants in Iloilo should have constant monitoring of the health of residents surrounding their plants.

This according to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Western Visayas Regional Director Jim O. Sampulna, in an interview Friday afternoon.

Sampulna is referring to the independent power producers Global Business Power (GBP) in La Paz, Iloilo City and the Palm Concepcion Power Corporation (PCPC) in Concepcion, Iloilo.

He said they are already preparing the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with both power firms on the monitoring of communities surrounding their plants.  DENR-6 is planning to sign the MOA with the firms in September.

Sampulna said there have been complaints about residents suffering from scabies and even lung disease due to the alleged pollutants emitted from the plants.

"I requested to have a constant monitoring of the health of the people surrounding the factory.I also requested them to have a clinic for those people around them," he added.

Currently, DENR has real-time monitoring of the pollution emissions of the firms.

During the PCPC's Stakeholder's Recognition Friday, President Roel Castro, in his presentation, showed that all their emissions were below the limit set by the DENR. (PNA)
