Caraga's cream of crop compete in popquiz show

BUTUAN CITY (25 August 2005) -- The battle of the brains among graduating high school students all over the region will be showcased by the regional offices of the Commission on Population and the Department of Education on September 23, this year.

Eight champions from the schools division of Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte (mainland), Siargao, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Butuan City, Bislig City, and Surigao City will compete in the upcoming Regional Population Quiz to be held in the covered court, Gov. D.O. Plaza Government Center, Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.

Being the regional champion in the last year's pop quiz, Agusan del Sur automatically inherits the chance to host the 2005 Regional Population Quiz.

The population quiz is an advocacy campaign of the POPCOM's Adolescent Health and Youth Development Program. It has been held jointly with DepEd since 1980 to raise the consciousness of young people on population and development issues.

"Popquiz is designed to generate awareness and interest in population and development issues and matters among the youth, community influential, and the general public", POPCOM Director Camilo Pangan said.

The POPCOM-Caraga chief added that the project is also aimed to increase the understanding and appreciation of the young people on issues affecting their welfare as they're molded to become responsible parents and productive citizens.

Meantime, contestants in the different divisions are very busy to equip themselves with the latest information on population and development as the division popquiz are conducted between August - September at the local level.

"Division and regional popquiz are being facilitated to ensure thorough screening of contestants. Whoever wins in the regional elimination will bring the name of Caraga in the national stage comes October, this year", Pangan added. (POPCOM-13/PIA-Caraga)
