Pinoys living abroad - What can you say about Racism?
« on: August 25, 2007, 12:48:19 PM »

This problem is still centered in the Country where I am now. Newly, we have 5 business men from India who are living in the former Eastern part were
seriously injured and were victims of this so-called race discrimination. I wish and hope that nobody will not encounter this type of unhuman greetings.

As a Filipino-American, I have encountered times where I was treated differently based on my physical and phenotypic appearance---particularly in areas that have little to no minority groups. I wasn't physically maltreated, but the tone of their voice was rather conspicuous--and their actions were subtle. Generally tho, most Americans are very accepting and it rarely is it that you meet an outspoken racist.

I try my best to rise above the situation by leading through example and through good works--as in treating them with respect instead of negativities. Natural man jud good na--kanang tao--if he or she hasn't seen a personal ethnic group before--ma prejudiced man jud na siya initially. After some time--ma change man sila--pero sometimes they dont--depends on the individual. Bambi, when I was in Ukraine last year--I did notice that there are a rising number of 'neo nazis' in eastern europe. Hope that your Indian co-workers are alright. Stay safe, k? :)

Ma sakit na lang atong dughan if we think about it too much. Ang ginoo--he will always provide and support--no matter what. Dili lang ta maka kaibao mo tabang man jud na siya--small or big.

so far, in almost three years here in belgium, i find the belgians very nice. they always greet you with a smile. but months ago when we were looking for an apartment, the signing of the contract didn't push through when the owner knew na dili ko belgian. my husband offered to pay the full six month-rent, pro wala jud sya nisugot.

da! gigabaan lagi nako!hangtud karon for rent pa gihapon ang apartment.merisi!

Hello Sana and Sano!

thanks for the interesting echoes and the related experiencd  to the topic cited.

well, keep on fighting not by way of physical maltreatment against the racist but like pare Onic above-stated options:

Pinoys/Pinays dili sab malupigan in terms of educational backgrounds.....keep on fighting in this connection!

to overcome racism in a light but effective manner in day-to-day encounter is to display our best and lead by example our positive values that would make the rest think... we must rise above all these.. and must prove that we don't deserve to be maltreated regardless its their homeplace... as the world getting a global village, there is no more boundaries...

it's normal to have people staring at you, pasagdan lang na. pero kung hilabtan naka, di na maayo. you should respond to them in a nice manner. show them that you deserve respect and of course always wear a smile. :)

Tinuud bitaw, pare. Ayaw lang ta ma sukul nila kai kita man i-target-on sa ilahang posse--my only advice to anyone suffering from this is to just ignore them and worry about your own business--kai dili man jud mo tulug ang ginoo--kaibao man jud na siya what everyone is doing to you or what you do to others. Dili na ta maka respond now--pero when it is time to be called home--each of us will be judged accordingly.

God bless everyone who was unjustly targeted---luuy lang pood ta kai hard working man jud na ang Filipino (especially boholanon)--we work had so we can rise over our oppressors and give a better future for our children. Thats all that counts. Bahala lan na sila--kai jealous man ang racists sa nato--kai we Filipinos are always successful wherever we go!! Ang gift na sa ginoo oi!

AMEN!!!

I really cant believe there are @ssholes that treat Filipino workers here in the US like that, Belle!! Bastosa pood na sila! You should have told them " Excuse me, I'm a registered nurse and I take care of patients as a living---saving your lives--why can't you show more respect to health care givers!!!"

Ma sukoooo jud ko after reading these stories, Belle! Last time galing---ning ingoon ahong mom about one time she was ill treated by an black CNA---okay my mom is an  intensive care nurse--been working as once since she was 19---and experienced. And there was this CNA that didnt even helped her and tried to look down on her---ning ingooon jud ahong mama niya "EXCUSE ME, why dont you get of your ass and assess some patients and clean the sheets. Last time I remember--I'm an ICU/RN and you're a nurse's aid."

Mao na!! Talk back pood sometimes--kay you guys do SO MUCH in the health care industry, you know! 10% of the US health care industry are made up by Filipinos (nurses, doctors, pharmacists, therapists etc). Thats saying alot---the least they could give our elders is RESPECT!

Really annoys me how they look down on immigrants with accents---that maybe so but our Filipino immigrants are EDUCATED!!! PUTANG INA MO!

Pre, daghan jud kastanan ignorante americans dinhi pood--mo tang-aw sila sa atong nawong--and maka ingoon sila in their ulo "oo they dont look white--they must be uneducated"--naa galing racism sila against sa other asians dinhi sa college nako. Thats why there are so many outspoken Fil-Ams who have to defend themselves because some 'native americans' think they are higher and greater than 'immigrant americans' pista na! Ug mo anhi ka sa ahong college, pre, maka kita jud ka daghaaaan kastanan ug 'Filipino-American Awareness Association' or kanang 'Asian-American Awareness Association' ---kay dili na jud ni sila mo tolerate being looked down on.

Dili pa lupig man jud ang pilipino, haha, which has its goods and bads. Dili pa lupig man among paryente ug among ginikanan---so of course dili pa lupig pud ilang anak. Gi molded na jud ang my generation Fil-Ams to 'defend and speak out'. Specially here in the east coast.

ooo..luuy pood, 'ate. Naa raba ko amigo indian--3/4 siya sioux and 1/4th siya itoom. Buutan siya raba--pero extremely intelligent. Dili na siya mo talk unless he's talked to--pero whenever he talks--ma kuyaw-an jud ta kai he speaks so eloquently--ma mesmorized kami. Ning anhi siya sa collegio--from the reservations siya sa north dakota--but got in here because of high scores and scholarship.

Daghan ko respeto for kanang native american, kay even tho gi maltreated sila sa ang puti tao sa una--mo survive jud na sila. Unconquorable spirit nila---maayo kastanan.

hahahhahaha magkatawa man ko anang pana-pana ug bow and arrow.... pagka primitive pod kaayo ana... No, Nebraska is a corn state, we went there sa tournament sa akong banana. My banana shoots pool (billiards) and there we met the Sioux from South Dakota.

I was only fascinated about the Native American stories when I met my banana. He never was a native  cultured and never followed their traditions...

Dire, halos half sa population sa mga doctors, mga Indians.

 ;D

Daghaan indian doctors over there 'te? There are significant indian docs in pennsylvania and new jersey reigon, but there are also very many Filipino docs too. Whenever I preceptor for Dr. Bermingham, a guy who i shadow in the pulmonology floor, he always introduces me to his collegues and most are Filipino or Indian. Daghaan jud ta kastanan in the medical field. Most nurses and docs in the east coast are usually Filipino or Indian. (indians usually tend to be very crowded in internal medicine and gastroenterology, but alot of Filipino docs are in emergency room, pediatrics, cardiology, and daghaaan puti docs in surgery) but that is my own opinion.

Speaking of which, when I was in the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine Professional Internship this summer, we were rotated for 2 weeks in the Cleveland Clinic, Huron Hospital System and the Cleveland Foot and Ankle Institute, and i was surprised because i saw sooooo many Filipino nurses (ICU,CCU,ER, OR, PCU, MED SURG); and then when we went to the main Cleveland Clinic Hospitals (cleveland clinic is the 3rd largest hospital sytem in the country) i was introduced to physicians and surgeons--and most of the residents and attending physicians in neurology, cardiology, emergency medicine and nephrology were Filipinos. It was ridiculous. There I was rotating around the 3rd largest hospital system in the entire United States---and the majority of physicians were either Filipino, Indian, and Puti. LOL.

It is undeniable jud; Filipinos constitute a major factor in the health system diri. Professionals jud na ang Pilipino. There was even patients who I heard would only refer to Filipino docs or cared by Filipino nurses. That really says alot about us. Buutan plus, maayo jud ang work ethic sa atong kababayan.
