The
Armed Forces of the Philippines formally welcomed and honored Wednesday the 155-strong Philippine Contingent to Haiti during ceremonies in Camp Aguinaldo Wednesday.
Col. Arnulfo Burgos, Jr., AFP spokesperson, said the 14th PCH served for six months in Haiti and helped the Caribbean country
recover from years of conflict and a deadly disaster.
He added the all-
Navy contingent was led by Col. George S. Fernandez.
His detachment consisted of 12 officers and 143
enlisted personnel, including six women.
Burgos said the unit was responsible for maintaining perimeter security of the force headquarters of United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH); providing administrative and logistics clerical services in the force headquarters; and operating and maintaining vehicles of the UN.
He added the PCH also provided security and protection to VIPs of the UN mission.
The AFP Peacekeeping Operations Center, under Col. Abraham Claro C. Casis, facilitated the welcome and awarding of UN Service Medals to Fernandez and his men.
Guest speaker Maj. Gen. Gregorio E. Macapagal, AFP deputy chief of staff, awarded the medals and formally welcomed the contingent.
AFP chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Jessie D. Dellosa extended his congratulations to the 14th PCH.
“The entire AFP organization gladly welcomes you and we are thankful for your safe homecoming. We congratulate you for showing the skill and professionalism of the AFP even in a foreign country,†he added.
Dellosa said: “It isn’t easy to be deployed for a long time, away from your family and your own country. But you have shown the world our own brand of unity that is the 'Bayanihan'.
"You showed that the Internal Peace and Security Plan can be implemented in an international context. It is truly important to give you the honor you deserve because of your selfless sacrifices.â€
