Pinoy Teens Harvest Math Medals in India

A contingent of the Philippine’s young math wizards harvested several gold, silver and bronze medals at the 1st Wizards at Mathematics International Competition (WIZMIC) 2007 in Lucknow, India.

A total of four individual gold, eight silver and five bronze medals were won by some 18 Philippine elementary school students at the WIZMIC 2007 held from Oct. 26 to 31.

The gold medalists were Audrey Lao, a grade 6 student at St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; Kenneth Co, grade 6, Xavier School; Andrew Caguntas, grade 6, Bangkal Elementary School in Makati City; and Jeff Carillo, grade 7, Colegio de San Agustin-Makati.

Awarded silver medals were Eloisa Napilot, grade 6, of Colegio de San Agustin-Biñan, Laguna; Maria Czarina Angela Lao, grade 4, St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; Jessica Orense, grade 7, CSA-Makati; Joelle Pena, grade 6, Poveda Learning Center; Mikaela Uy, grade 5, St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; Ana Batungbakal, grade 5, San Beda College-Alabang; John Chuatak, grade 4, St. Stephen’s School; and Jakov Dumbrique, grade 6, St. Paul College-Ilocos Sur.

Meanwhile, bronze medalists were Oscar Acopiado Jr., grade 7, CSA-Makati; Reine Reynoso, grade 5, St. Paul-Pasig; Austin Chua, grade 4, St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; Wilford Julio, grade 5, St. Jude Catholic School-Manila; and Nathaniel Ang, grade 5, Philadelphia School.

Audrey Lao, Kenneth Co, Czarina Lao and John Chuatak of the Metro Manila team; Jeff Carillo, Ana Batungbakal, Joelle Pena, and Reine Reynoso of the Mindanao team and Mikaela Uy and Austin Chua, of the Unity team, all won gold medals in their respective group competitions.

The Luzon team composed of Andrew Caguntas, Eloisa Napilot, Jessica Orense and Jakov Dumbrique; and the Visayas Team of Oscar Acopiado Jr., Wilford Julio, Nathaniel Ang and Richard Militante, won team silver medals.

Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines screened possible delegates to the WIZMIC, which also had for contestants students from Thailand, Taiwan, Iran, Nepal, India, Bulgaria and Indonesia.

MTG, headed by the Philippines’ lone Paul Erdos awardee Dr. Simon Chua, said it is proud of the triumph of their wards.

The 1st WIZMIC was organized by the City Montessori Schools of India to encourage Math excellence among children all over the world.
