Pinoy invention: PORTASOL multipurpose Speed Drying Solar Tray
 
Enterprising Filipino farmers now enjoy tremendous benefits from the multi-purpose Portable Speed Drying Solar Trays (SDST)  in drying their rice harvests. 
 
Engineered and invented by noted Filipino inventor Fransco “Popoy” Pagayon, president of the Filipino Inventors Society, the PORTASOL SDST solidly responds to the government’s National Post-harvest and Food Security programs.
 
The PORTASOL facility is a plain but cost-efficient and effective grains drying facility that answer the Ftlipino farmers’ perennial problems in palay drying, even as many of them still use the highways in drying their palay  which poses risks not only to motorists but themselves as well.
 
Pagayon said among the PORTASOL SDST’s outstanding features and unprecedented advantages include the following:
 
-- It uses either either natural (solar) or artificially induced heat (charcoal and/or
   rice hall sinders) and employs inherent substrate heat conduction and retention factors
  for fasterand cost-efficient drying.
 
-- Its is higly cost-efficient and effective and assures hygienic grains and virtual 100%   
   grains recovery.
 
-- Being portable, it is usable anywhere, even on rocky or soggy grounds and uneven
   terrain. It requires no paved roads or surfaces and does not need permanent
   occupancy  or land property acquisition.
 
-- It ensures ease, speed and convenience in moving grains.
 
 -- It is stackable for space-saving multi-level vertical grains storage for mtltiplied pre-
    mill granary storage.
 
-- It allows storage ventilation or aerating by providing necessary breathing spaces

Pagayon said the PORTASOL SDST has undergone successfully impressive field tests in the presence of officials of the Department of Agriculture and its Bureau of Post-harvest Research and Extension (BPRE, now PHilMech); Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philrice); and local and foreign agricultural technologists.
 
One of the field tests, conducted during the Post Harvest Loss Prevention Week and Dilver Anniversary of BPRE in the Science City of Munoz in Nueva Ecija, was attended by GrainPro, Inc. vice president Tom de Bruin, a specialist in organic storage systems, added Pagayon who also invented the PROBaton truncheon now used by policemen and barangay tanods. Maraming magsasakang Pilipino ang masayang nakikinaang na ngayon mula sa PORTASOL multi-purpose Speed Drying Solar Trays (SDST) na gamit sa  pabibilad at pagtutuyo ng kanilang aning palay.
 
Likha ni Francisco “Popoy” Pagayon, isang kilalang Filipino inventor at pangulo ng Filipino Inventors Society, ang PORTASOL SDST ay mabisang ambag sa mga programa ng pamahalaan sa National Post-harvest at Food Security.
 
Ang PORTASOL SDST ay simple ngunit matitpid at mabisang pasilidad na tugon sa matagal ng mga suliranin ng mga magsasakang Pilipino sa pagtutyo ng palay nila. Karaniwan ay ginagamit nila ang mga sementadong karsada na nagdudulot ng matinding peligto hindi lamang sa mga motorist kundi sa kanila na rin.
 
Ayon kay Pagayon, ang ilan lamang sa mga mahahalagang kapakinabangan mula sa PORTASOL SDST ay ang mga sumusunod:
 
•Gumagamit ito ng natural na init ng araw (solar) o init  mula sa uling o ipa ng palay para sa pagtutuyo ng palay.
 
•Sadyang matipid at mabisa ito, bukod sa tiyak na malinis, ligtas at halos 100% na walang nawawala sa mga butil na tinutuyo nito.
 
•Dahil sa ito’y naililipat-lipat, maipupwesto ito sa mabato o basang lupa o hindi patag na paglalagyan. Hindi nito kailangan ang sementadong karsada at permanenteng pupuwestuhan a kaya bumili ng lupaing gagamitin.
 
•Tinitiyak nito ang madali, mabilis at maginhawang paglipat-lipat ng palay, bukod sa maginhawa itong mapagpapatung-patong para matipid sa espasyo.
 
•Magdudulot din ito storage ventilation o libreng pagikot ng hangin sa pamamagitan ng pagtatalaga ng espasyo sa nakasalansang tray o lagayan ng butil para maiwasan ang pagkabulok sahail sa “fungal mold, rot and mildew spoilage,” at peste.
 
•Makakatulong ito sa pagpapataas ng produksiyon at kalidad ng butil, at bukod sa palay, magagamit din sa pagtutuyo ng mais, mga prutas, gulay, isda at ibang buto gaya mongo.
 
Ayon kay Pagayon, sumailalim na ang PORTASOL SDST sa marami at matagumpay na mga ‘field tests’ na sinaksihan ng mga opisyal ng Department of Agriculture at ng Bureau of Post-harvest Research and Extension (BPRE, na PHilMech na ngayon); Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philrice); at mga local at dayuhang mga ‘agricultural technologists.’
