CEBU CITY -- An Australian national accidentally shot and killed his Filipina fiancée when the firearm he was playing with went off.
Paul Anton Balen Smith, 32, an English teacher from Sydney, Australia, surrendered to police after bringing Trishia Jocel Baisac, 30, to Chong Hua Hospital
Baisac, who was Smith’s girlfriend of two years, did not make it alive to the hospital. She took a bullet in the upper left side of her body.
An investigation by the Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section showed the incident occurred inside their bedroom at the second floor of Kevin’s Apartment on Justice St., Peace Valley in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Smith narrated to Insp. Mario Monilar, Homicide Section chief, that he and Baisac were talking while he was playing with the licensed Glock 9mm pistol, registered under Baisac’s name.
The gun, however, went off, hitting Baisac.
Smith ran downstairs and called his houseboys, Ferry Jun Etac and Faustino Atienza Jr., to get a taxicab, which brought Baisac to the hospital.
Personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operations (Soco) 7 led by PO3 Ronolo Manolong recovered the 9mm pistol, a magazine loaded with 12 live ammunition and another loaded magazine, 10 pieces of live ammunition, an empty shell from a 9mm, a stainless knife and a bloodstained shirt.
Monilar said there were no signs of a struggle when they inspected the bedroom. He described Smith as “remorseful.â€
As soon as Baisac’s death certificate is issued, Monilar said, a complaint for homicide will be filed against Smith before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office.
A TV Patrol report also said police will let Smith undergo a drug test.
“Don’t aim your firearm at anybody you are not willing to destroy,†was Monilar’s advice to gun holders.
