An official from the Department of Agriculture announced the government is planning to hike the price of yellow corn anew to stimulate production and complement the swine and poultry industry.
"We have recently approved a higher buying price for yellow corn at P11.50 per kilo. We are studying further increase of P1.50 to make it at par with (the price of) white corn at P13 per kilo," DA Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup informed farmers and National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST) officials during the
Philippine Agriculture 2020 roundtable discussions at the Traders Hotel in Pasay City.
Farmers needed incentives to increase their production of yellow corn, the main ingredient for animal feeds manufacturing.
Agriculture officials are expected to endorse this move at the next meeting of the National Food Authority Council.
The domestic swine and poultry industries are highly dependent on imported yellow corn and feed wheat, soybean meal, fish meal and breeding stocks.
The department is considering a price increase, most likely P1.50 per kilo for yellow corn, in response to the farmers' clamor for better support price.
Yellow corn effectively accounts for about one-third of the total cost of production and thus its regular supply is a major determinant of the productivity and competitiveness of swine and poultry
NAST president Emil Javier said that the government and its agriculture research arm is also trying to develop hybrid of yellow corn with novel high quality protein train to produce competitive supply of swine and poultry products. - PNA
