ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has suspended boat trips from this city to nearby provinces due to the prevailing inclement weather condition in the region.
Lieutenant Commander (Lcdr.) Alvin Dagalea, Zamboanga Coastguard Station Commander, said the suspension of boat trips took effect at 1 p.m. Friday.
Affected by the suspension order are boats traveling from this city to Basilan and Sulu and vice-versa.
Dagalea said they suspended the boat trips as it is dangerous for them to sail due to rough seas brought about by continuous rain coupled with strong winds.
A fastcraft ferry was forced to return to the local port after it was battered by strong waves while in the vicinity of the Greater Sta. Cruz Island.
The fastcraft ferry, which plies the Zamboanga-Basilan route via Isabela City, departed the local port before the PCG issued the suspension order.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the continuous rain and strong winds are triggered by the Low Pressure Area (LPA) over Surigao del Sur.
PAGASA said that based on all available data, the LPA was estimated at 175 kilometer northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur as of 3 a.m. Friday. Southwest monsoon affects Palawan. (PNA)
