Press Release: Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel stationed in Eastern Smar promptly responded to a distress call of a shipping vessel off the waters of Guiuan, and rescued 16 VIPs and 5 other PCG crew, today, 17 March 2021.
The sixteen VIPs and five PCG personnel were on board the F/B BENCOR en route to Homohon Island when the fishing boat encountered engine trouble at the vicinity waters between Manicani and Homohon Island.
As reported by the District Commander in Coast Guard District Eastern Visayas, it was stated that around 7:44 AM when the fishing vessel had engine problem, and made contact with PCG station.
Then at around 8:22AM, three (3) rubber boats with PCG Search and Rescue team on board arrived in the area and assisted the distressed vessel. At around 8:31AM, a security vessel for the event that the VIPs were about to attend, the MRRV “BRP Suluan,” arrived, shipsided, and successfully embarked/transferred all the passengers. The security vessel then departed for Homohon Island for an unveiling ceremony set to be attended by the VIPs.
Among the passenger VIPs were Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan C. Agda and Eastern Samar Representative Maria Fe Abunda. The two officials have expressed their appreciation and gratitude to PCG Commandant Admiral George V. Ursabia Jr., for the timely and prompt rescue operation by PCG personnel.
Also, Congresswoman Abunda, realizing the value and importance of the PCG, said that she is committing the funding of the construction of the Coast Guard Eastern Samar Building, of which Mayor Agda, on the other hand, said that he will donate the lot where the building will be constructed.
