TWO MEN walked away with more than P6 million in cash and jewelry after breaking into a pawnshop in Tondo, Manila, before dawn Wednesday, the police said.
The burglars entered the Bellardo Pawnshop owned by Mario Ramos by boring a hole on the floor of their rented room located directly above the establishment located at the corner of Jose Abad Santos and Tayuman Streets, investigators said.
The thieves, both male between 40 and 50 years old, made off with P1.8 million in cash and several pieces of jewelry worth about P5 million, Supt. Ferdinand Quirante, chief of the Manila Police District Station 2, said.
The official added that they had invited witnesses who could describe the two men, among them the owner and employees of the pawnshop.
The burglary was discovered by an employee identified as Vernalyn Pulido as she opened the pawnshop at around 8 a.m., the police investigation showed.
Pulido told probers she immediately noticed two holes in the ceiling near the entrance as soon she entered the pawnshop. There were also bits of trash on the floor.
She said it seemed the burglars had decided to drill a second hole after they found out that the first one didn’t give them access to the vault. When Pulido checked the steel cabinet in the vault containing the valuables, it was already empty, she said.
Ramos said the two men started renting the room about a month ago after he got a call from a woman called Malou who told him that two of her vendors would be using the room.
He said the behavior of the two tenants had not seemed odd until Tuesday night when their radio was turned on at full volume. “We had no idea they were already digging a hole,†he told reporters.
