BACOLOD CITY -– Floods and rains brought by Typhoon "Paolo" resulted to PHP15.557 million in initial damage to crops in Negros Occidental, figures released by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) on Monday showed.

Affected crops were mostly rice, corn and vegetables planted in southern Negros farms.

Damage to rice reached PHP15.53 million, affecting three municipalities: Valladolid valued at PHP13.574 million; Hinigaran, PHP1.776 million; and Binalbagan, PHP179,500.

In Valladolid, total area damaged was 411 hectares in 14 villages, affecting 274 farmers.

A total of 174.41 hectares were affected in Hinigaran planted by 171 farmers in four villages; while 11.55 hectares were damaged in Binalbagan owned by 13 farmers in two villages.

Affected corn and vegetable farms were also in Binalbagan, amounting to PHP13,655 and PHP13,500 in damage, respectively.

OPA chief Japhet Masculino, in a report submitted to Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., said assessment of affected areas is ongoing.

From September 22 to 30, villages in Negros Occidental hit by floods reported PHP11.4 million in total crop damage and production losses.

An OPA terminal report released first week of October showed the hardest-hit was the rice sector that posted a damage of PHP11 million, affecting 727 farmers in 47 barangays of six local government units in southern Negros.

In San Enrique town, affected were 278 farmers planting on 369.19 hectares, registering the highest production losses of almost PHP5.1 million.

Neighboring Valladolid reported a damage of PHP1.6 million to crops of 153 farmers in 254.85 hectares of rice farms.

Sipalay City reported a damage of almost PHP1.4 million, covering 78 farmers with 69 hectares of ricefields.

Others were Murcia with PHP1.3 million damage; Bago City, almost PHP1.1 million; and Ilog, PHP648,000.

The OPA report also showed PHP373,650 in losses in the vegetable sector, affecting 36 farmers in a 5.8-hectare plantation in Valladolid town.(PNA)
