BACOLOD CITY -- The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Negros Occidental (HRANO) is closely coordinating with concerned government agencies to ensure the safety of the future supply of poultry products in the wake of the bird flu outbreak in Pampanga.
HRANO Director Roberto Magalona said they want government to continue implementing strict quarantine measures while food establishments were also doing necessary precautionary measures for safety.
“Since all hotels and restaurants are using chickens, thus animal diseases like bird flu, if not prevented, would really affect the industry,” Magalona said.
As of Tuesday, restaurants have yet to report a slowdown in the consumption of dishes with chickens and other poultry products as main ingredient.
The reported bird flu outbreak in Luzon has not created fear among Negrenses and did not limit their chicken consumption, Magalona said.
Still, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) said that “lack of awareness” could result to lower chicken consumption.
The next market monitoring on August 21 will determine the movement in supply, demand, and price of the commodity.
Negros Occidental does not source out chicken from Pampanga or any part of Luzon as it has a surplus in local supply.
Every month, the province has an average production of seven million heads of backyard native chicken, including gamefowl and free-range.
For broiler or white chicken, Negros Occidental has an average monthly production of 1.5 to two million heads.
The supply is more than the province’s average daily consumption requirement of only 55.32 metric tons for native and dressed chicken, PVO figures showed.(PNA)
