LAOAG CITY, Aug. 14 — Representatives of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) based in San Fernando City, La Union visited Ilocos Norte on Monday to personally deliver assistance to victims of the storm surge in Pasuquin town recently.
OWWA Acting Regional Director Gerardo Rimorin said about 150 recipients in four barangays of Pasuquin, who have both active and non-active overseas Filipino worker family members, were given cash assistance up to PHP 1,000.
Last July 31, the coastal villages of Caruan, Pragata, Dilavo and Davila in Pasuquin town were hit by storm surge brought about by the howling winds of tropical storm “Huaning” as typhoon “Gorio” exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
More than 100 fishing boats were totally or partially damaged while at least 17 houses made of lightweight materials destroyed. This prompted the municipality of Pasuquin to declare a state of calamity.
During the visit, OWWA also released cash assistance to some 200 victims of super typhoon Lawin last year.
"There are claimants who were on our waiting list and upon verification, they were qualified, so we gave them assistance as well," he said. (PNA)
