SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — Some 149,517 rice farmers in Region 1 (Ilocos) are set to receive PHP5,000 cash subsidy under the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Financial Subsidy to Rice Farmers (FSRF) program.
In a forum Monday, DA-1 officer-in-charge, regional director Erlinda Manipon, said the beneficiaries are farmers who plant one hectare or less registered under the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture.
There are 36,679 farmer-beneficiaries listed in La Union, 49, 343 in Ilocos Sur, 32,289 in Ilocos Norte and 31,206 in Pangasinan, she said.
“The municipal and provincial agriculture offices are conducting validation and they will submit the list to the regional office on April 23, and we will submit the list on April 24 to the central office,” Manipon said.
She clarified farmers who are also beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program will no longer be covered by the FSRF.
“The amount will be received by the farmers through their cash card. For those who still do not have the cash card, a stub will be provided for them to claim their cash cards,” she added.
Aside from the cash subsidy, the DA has other programs for the farmers amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
“In the expanded hybrid rice production, farmers are given 15 kilos per hectare of hybrid seedlings and also if they buy three bags of fertilizer, they will get another three bags of fertilizer for free. While for the expanded inbred rice production, if they buy two bags of fertilizer, they will get another two bags of fertilizer for free,” Manipon said.
She added the Philippine Rice Research Institute also distributes free fertilizers to the farmers.
DA-1 likewise provides free low-land vegetable seeds to individuals and seedlings to some farmers in towns who will plant earlier. (PNA)
