ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has continued the implementation of Operation Plan Toktok Dalaw (Oplan Toklaw) to reconnect forgotten inmates with their families.
The program was initiated in April this year by the late Chief Insp. Ervin Diaz, former Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC) warden.
Diaz succumbed to cardiac arrest earlier this month.
Through the Oplan Toklaw, ZCRC personnel, in coordination with barangay officials, paid a visit to the families of inmates with no visitors and encouraged them to visit their detained loved ones.
Supt. Allan Vargas, who replaced Diaz, on Tuesday said Oplan Toklaw will address the sad plight of the inmates who are not visited by their relatives at the ZCRC.
“We pity the inmates, since their relatives have forgotten them already. So we remind their relatives to visit them at the (detention) center,” Vargas said.
Vargas said they will also provide free rides to those who don’t have the means to visit their relative-inmates.
He said more than 200 inmates have been listed with “no visitors” for years already even as they are residents of this city.
He added they have so far reconnected five inmates with their respective families since Oplan Toklaw was adopted.
“We wanted them to meet with each other and to get closer again as this could also help in the reform agenda of the center for the inmates,” he said.
He said Oplan Toklaw will continue for as long as there are still inmates listed with no visitors. (PNA)
