OFWs contributed more in 2017 to Philippine economy

REP. RON P. SALO
KABAYAN Party-list
Assistant Majority Leader

Member, Health, Overseas Workers Affairs, and 10 other Committees

OFWs’ REMITTANCES IN 2017 IS $28 BILLION,

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS TOTAL IN 2017 IS $10 BILLION

With remittances of at least $28 billion, our OFWs contributed more in 2017 to the Philippine economy than did foreign direct investors, who poured in $10 billion.

I just want to point out these hard facts to put into context, compare their relative impact, and remind our government’s agencies to take better care of our OFWs while they also exert ample efforts to welcome foreign investments.

This is not an either-or proposition. Take care of both OFWs and foreign investors, but do a much better job with our OFWs.

The DFA, DOLE, DOH, and DSWD should deploy social workers, psychiatrists, and lawyers to those countries where we have the most numbers of distressed OFWs.

These same agencies should also have social workers, psychiatrists, and lawyers who are part of the teams welcoming repatriated and returning OFWs from Kuwait and other countries.

(END)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
