The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) assured Saturday that the government will do everything to save overseas Filipino worker May Vecina from the death penalty for allegedly killing the son of her Kuwaiti employer in January.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Special Concerns Rafael Seguis made the assurance, saying the government will do its best like in the case of Marilou Ranario who was sentenced by the Kuwait Court of Cassation to die by hanging for killing her Kuwaiti employer.

Seguis said the government will provide legal counsel for Vecina. The legal counsel will defend her and convince her former employers to accept blood money in exchange for their forgiveness for the death of their son Salem Sulaiman Al-Otaib.

"We will provide her with legal assistance fund and blood money. We are doing everything," Seguis said.

Charges of murder were filed against the 28-year-old Filipina maid for allegedly killing her ward. She was also charged with two counts of frustrated murder for allegedly slashing the throat of the victim’s 13-year-old brother Abdullah and stabbing his 17-year-old sister Hajer.

Hajer suffered injuries on her neck, ear and head and a stab wound on her shoulder while Abdullah suffered stab wounds on his head and hand.

Reports said the incident happened while the children’s parents were preparing for Maghreb prayers on the ground floor of their house.

After the incident, Vecina jumped from the second floor of her employers’ house in Mumbarak, Al-Kabeer district, resulting in serious back injuries.

Vecina reportedly reacted violently to insults hurled at her by her employer’s family.

Leo Vecina, May’s husband, wrote a letter to President Arroyo and appealed to save his wife from the death sentence and bring her back to their hometown in Matalam, North Cotabato.
