Nursing student jumps off mall, dies
« on: November 17, 2011, 09:30:00 AM »
ILOILO CITY --
Unable to take the school pressures, a graduating nursing student ended her life Tuesday morning by jumping
off the third floor of a mall in this city's financial district.

Authorities rushed Vina Marie del Rosario, 22, to a nearby hospital after she jumped from the third floor of the
Atrium mall at General Luna St. here. Doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Del Rosario, a fourth-year nursing student of St. Therese College, died of severe head injuries, hospital officials said.

The victim was positively identified by her family and school officials who rushed to St. Paul's Hospital, located across the Atrium mall.

Her family said a lingering mental problem and supposed pressures in school, particularly her thesis work, triggered the suicide.

Elementary school principal Mila Engalgado, a family friend, told Bombo Radyo Iloilo that Del Rosario had been
worried about her thesis until past midnight on Monday.

Del Rosario's peers described her as "studious" and "very serious" in her studies.

A salon staff told reporters that the nursing student was already at the third level of the mall minutes
after the establishment opened at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Luben Calixto, a salon staff, said he initially saw Del Rosario sitting on the bench looking distressed.
The next time he saw her, the victim was already throwing herself off the steel railings.

Shoppers in the mall's first floor were shocked at the sight of the woman who made a 30-foot death leap.

Calixto said salon staff tried to grab the woman but help came seconds late. (Sunnex)

We have to establish balance in life. If she couldn't finish her thesis, it's not the end of the world. I hope the school where she was studying would institute some counseling for students under distress.

I agree, students shouldn't be pressured to finish if they are not in the mental capacity to complete their studies. If one is stressed in such a way that it affects one's performance in school and in the personal setting, then it would be to the best interest if that student takes time off to care for one's mental self. Perhaps this woman felt that she had to finish with her batch else loose face. Luoy lang pood bitaw because it seemed as if she was desperate, and the suicide was , in her logical point of view, more favorable than answering to her family and or family in case she did not graduate with her batch.

If this was the case, then it would be probable that her actions were due to acute psychosis; a state where a person is not in the right state of mind , where one's judgmental state is severely inhibited due to the abnormally high levels of dopamine.

I have seen similar cases in the hospital. A pharmacy student was admitted into the ER because of a case of acute psychosis, which led him to take 60 pills of acetaminophen. A result of academic stress-induced attempted suicide.

In either case, I do hope that the school that she attended invests in student counseling centers, which can better address any intrapsychic tensions that students are having as a result of academic stress and/or personal stress.

My condolences go out to her family...

usa sa mga pari sa cebu nga among family friend, the brightest in class, hapit wa mapari.  gaduda na intawon siya sa una kun mopadayon ba siyag ordination.  he was gripped with guilt.  whether it was survivor's guilt or whatever guilt, wa na ko kahibawo.

on his way to cagayan de oro in a boat, naa siyay nakaistorya nga fellow passenger.  bisag unsa lang kuno ilang giistoryahan.  kalma kaayo sila; just two strangers who got to talk, both simple passengers in a ship who were comfortable in their anonymity.

gihuso sa iyang kaistorya ang iyang relo, unya gihatag niya, dayon ingon, "ikaw na lay bahalag pangadye para nako" or something like that, unya niambak diretso sa dagat.  gabii tong dako.  despite a search and rescue attempt by the ship (it was a superferry ship) up to daylight, wa na gyod makit-i ang tawo.  gilubatlubatan intawon ang ordinandus.

his words when he told me the story: i would be wondering for the rest of my life if i could have done something more... why i failed to see it coming... i could have held him tight... what kind of a priest would i be after that... etc.  namuypoy akong tuhod nga naminaw.  i knew i needn't tell him that it wasn't his fault.  my silence and understanding were my best answers, or so i hoped.

thankfully, nipadayon siya sa iyang ordination, which i was able to attend.  he is now one of the monsignors in cebu.  kana bitaw nga di obispo pero titled nag monsignor.

oh, yes, fr chic, di gyod nato maaninaw unsay sulod sa ulo ug kasingkasing sa mga ingon anang mag-suicide.  we can only pray for them and pray as well that we never have to go through the same tragedy involving those closest to us or even with our own selves.  it is this tragedy of committing the greatest of sins-- according to a priest-- the sin against the holy spirit.  in other words, despair.

My best friend committed suicide during our 4th year of college. It realy is hard to explain into words the feelings one has when someone you care about, have loved, and spent a great amount of time with , commits suicide. Robert was his name. He was a handsome 22 year old with a future a head of him. He was an English/ Creative Writing major who also regularly took history classes with me. He knew my biases, as did I , and was not afraid to express my differences in opinion; our debates and conversations would last hours. Robert was the type of man who listened to new wave, deen, and one who was active in social programs as well as in volunteering in the Relief Effort for Hurricane Katrina.

He was full of life, and we had so much planned. We were planning to go to the Philippines together in 2008 after our graduation (sadly, Rob would not graduate in '08 as he passed on November 2007).

I saw him the day before he committed suicide. I was running down to the campus center to pick up mail and i ran into him. I was rushing to attend a seminar that evening. So i remember telling him, "Hey, bro, this weekend, let's hang out at my place and watch some movies or something...?"

He said in reply, "That sounds good..Al..."

As I walked passed him, I remember he took his hand and he put it on top of my shoulders. Squeezed and let go.

The next day, I found out from a mutual friend ad then later from campus security that my best friend killed himself. He was only 22. I was completely devastated.

My dearest brother, Robert. My best friend.

He would have been 26 years old this year. He was 4 days older than I.

States, yes, Robert committed suicide. It was made known to me through his mother that he was battling major clinical depression for a considerable time. For me, it was just very difficult to believe that a man who was so full of life, dreams, aspirations and ...intellectual whit was actually considering suicide.

Had I known, I would have tried to intervene. Had I known what were going on in his thoughts , thoughts that he kept from his closest friends, I would have done my best to intervene. Robert hid it so well.

This is the problem with people who are battling severe clinical depression, a condition that Rob was suffering from, one that was not made known to me until it was already too late.

I am sure that this particular nursing student who jumped to her death was experiencing undiagnosed, untreated severe clinical depression. Suicide as a result of severe depression affects one's judgment, a result of the devastating imbalance of hormones (serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) in the central nervous system. One is not in the mental capacity to make right judgment, secondary to dopamine-induced psychosis.

I am very empathetic to her situation and to her story. I can personally relate to the kind of loss her friends and family experienced.

Trust me, it is very hard. Robert's 4th year death anniversary was this past November 19. I still cannot believe he is gone.
Luoy lang pod intawn si Robert, bata pa siya kaayo. Luoy kaayo because he was such a good guy; the type of guy that helped someone when they needed help, the type of guy who would give money to someone even tho he had very little. Buotan to siya kaayo, I will never forget the goodness that was in his heart.

My only regret, is that he is no longer here anymore. He was my closest confidant. I will forever miss our coffee breaks and our weekend conversations.

There is no word that can describe the feeling of loss when he passed. This feeling , to this day, still lingers. The loss of one's best friend so suddenly....it is difficult.

That is all i have to say.
