DUMAGUETE CITY – The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Negros Oriental on Monday reported that there are no monitored transport strikes or rallies in the province.
Sr. Supt. Edwin Portento, acting PNP provincial director, in an interview Monday afternoon said the province remains peaceful and orderly.
Portento, however, disclosed that he has received reports some “cause-oriented groups” have gone to Cebu, another island in the Central Visayas region, to participate in the transport strike rallies.
He assured that the PNP is ready to take on the responsibility to maintain peace and order, especially with the deployment of hundreds of police personnel for the Buglasan Festival from October 13 to 22.
Portento believes, however, that peace will prevail in Negros Oriental, especially in Dumaguete City where Buglasan Festival activities are being held.
As of noon today, public transport such as pedicabs, jeepneys and buses continued plying the city and other routes.
Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is also monitoring the situation here following a directive from their regional office regarding the nationwide transport strike.
LTO-Bayawan City District Office chief Alberta Janine Lawas disclosed that her office has not received any report of transport strike or similar protest activities that may paralyze public conveyance services.
Monday was declared a holiday with classes suspended in public schools and work in government offices in anticipation of the nationwide strike by the transport sector that is opposing, among other things, the jeepney modernization program. (PNA)
