No transport strike, business as usual in NegOcc
« on: May 18, 2020, 12:24:55 PM »
BACOLOD CITY-- It’s business as usual for establishments in Negros Occidental, including its capital Bacolod City, since the three major transport organizations in the province on Monday decided not to join the two-day nationwide transport strike.

However, all government offices and local government units here suspended work, adhering to the Malacañang directive as stated in Memorandum Circular Number 28 “to minimize public inconvenience arising from the planned nationwide transportation strike.”

Frank Carbon, regional governor of Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental, confirmed “it’s business as usual” in the province.

With the ongoing 38th MassKara Festival in Bacolod, the United Negros Drivers Operators Center (UNDOC), Sentrong Samahan ng Tsuper at Operators Negros (SSTONE), and Federation of Bacolod City Drivers Association (FEBACDA) decided not to join the strike.

UNDOC Secretary-General Diego Malacad said they don’t want to cause inconvenience to tourists during the city’s festival.

Still, he stressed that they are supporting the protest of the transport sector, seeking to oppose the phase-out of old jeepneys.
Malacad’s group held a rally in Bacolod Monday noon.

He added that more than 3,000 protestors from Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental are joining the protest in Cebu.

In Bacolod, Mayor Evelio Leonardia issued Executive Order No. 31 suspending classes both in public and private schools, and work in all offices and departments of the city government.

On Facebook, private schools in Bacolod like the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, University of St. La Salle, and Colegio San Agustin also announced the suspension of its classes in all levels. (PNA)
