No major issue during Traslacion, says health dept
MANILA, Jan. 10 (PNA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) reported that it did not encounter any serious issue during Monday’s procession of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, Manila.
“Walang serious conditions (There was no serious condition). I think only 12 were referred to the hospitals but they were eventually discharged,†Health Secretary Dr. Paulyn Ubial said Tuesday.
Ubial said the 18 medical teams spread by the department along the path of the procession recorded a total of 579 consultations involving minor illnesses.
“Natutuwa po kami na talagang napaka-disiplinado ng mga tao at wala po tayong any major issue during the Traslacion this year (We are happy that the devotees showed discipline and we did not have any major health issue during this year’s Traslacion),†she said, noting that their medical teams’ reports did not include cases handled by the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Last year, the health department recorded two deaths -- one from a heart attack and the other from a liver ailment. Both patients were rushed to the hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the PRC reported that as of 3 a.m. Tuesday, they had served a total of 2,221 devotees, mostly at the Liwasang Bonifacio first aid station. They had eight major cases that included one pregnant woman who felt dizzy. Some 879 devotees suffered a rise in blood pressure, while 479 suffered from toothache, dizziness, stiff neck and allergies, as well as wounds, bruises, abrasions, and body pain sustained from falling, being pushed or crushed by the crowd as they attempted to get to the ‘andas’, the carriage of the Black Nazarene.
A total of 12 persons were taken by ambulance to the Philippine General Hospital, Ospital ng Maynila and Orthopedic Center for hypertension, abdominal pain, bone fractures, breathing difficulties, fainting, seizure, second-degree burns, chest pains, hyperventilation, sprain and bone dislocation.
The PRC also provided three devotees counseling support; helped 92 devotees trace their lost companions; and provided 590 persons psycho-social support. (PNA)
