COTABATO CITY – Some 100 orphans in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao were beneficiaries of relief goods and protection kits for 2019 coronavirus disease (Covids-19) from a Bangsamoro family-run foundation on Monday.
Volunteers of Taha Foundation delivered food items and Covid-19 protection kits to the children.
The charity is named after Taha Basman, a Maranao community development worker from Marawi City and former commissioner of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The young orphans, whose parents died during the wars and other calamities in Maguindanao, are currently living with relatives in the municipality.
"Despite the challenges we face in light of the threat of Covid-19, we still find solace, hope, and excitement in welcoming the holy month of Ramadan," said Tajallih Basman, son of the late commissioner and current head of the foundation.
Each of the relief packs contained 15 kilos of rice, eight cans of sardines, eight cans of tuna, 12 packs of noodles, 12 pieces of chocolate drink, a kilo of sugar, a pack of iodized salt, one liter of vinegar and cooking oil and a pack of biscuits.
With barely a few days into the observance of Ramadan, a beneficiary said: "The supplies we received today will assure us that we’ll have food for “iftar” (sunset meal) and “sahur” (pre-dawn meal) during Ramadan.”
"Some of the goods were delivered to the houses of those who cannot go out due to the enhanced community quarantine being implemented", Basman said.
Taha Foundation has been implementing the Orphan Support Program (OSP) in the region in partnership with the US-based Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD), an international charity organization.
The foundation was organized in June 2009 to continue the community activities undertaken by its namesake. (PNA)
