ILOILO CITY -- The three branches of the New Ginzu Merchandising commercial establishment in Iloilo were simultaneously shut down by the Bureau of Internal Revenue 11 (Panay island) for tax violations on Thursday.
In an interview Friday, Alberto Olasiman, Regional Director of BIR-11, explained the establishment was closed for their failure to declare their correct sales and pay the right amount of taxes.
Olasiman led the enforcement of the closure order signed by Arnel Guballa, Revenue Deputy Commissioner for Operations. They were assisted by personnel of the Iloilo City Police Office and the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
The main branch of the establishment is located at Ledesma St. in this city while the two other branches are in the towns of Miag-ao and Pototan in the province.
Olasiman said that the closure of the establishment stemmed from the request of Lilivic Gatdola, revenue district officer of Iloilo City, to conduct tax surveillance because there might be under-declaration of the establishment’s sales.
In response to the request, Olasiman ordered simultaneous tax surveillance in the different branches of the establishment and to collate their sales last July.
“We found out that they have big understatement on their sales, so we informed the taxpayer about the violation and requested them to rectify the failures and pay the corresponding tax,” he said.
Despite the five-day notice, he said the taxpayer still failed to amend and pay the tax deficiency.
Though he refused to divulge the exact amount of tax deficiency of New Ginzu, Olasiman said the establishment’s tax declaration was found to be at least 30 percent short of the correct sales.
“We will wait if they will pay for the tax deficiency then we will request for the lifting of the closure order and for them to open the business,” he said.
Aside from the New Ginzu Merchandising, there are other establishments in the region that are under surveillance for alleged tax violations, Olasiman said.
He, however, refused to disclose the names of these establishments for security reasons but he said that two of them are in Kalibo, Aklan.
Olasiman appealed to the owner of the business establishments in the region to declare their correct sales and pay their corresponding taxes.
“There are some informers that give us data and with that, we can proceed with the issuance of mission for tax surveillance,” he said. (PNA)
