The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded
316 human immunodeficiency (HIV) cases last September, the highest ever since the country started recording its cases in 1984.
Of the 316 cases, 10 were already reported as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS)and were all males. The median age for the cases is 24 and all contracted the infection through sexual contact - six homosexual, one heterosexual and three bisexual.
Based on the DOH’s Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry, the new recorded cases have brought to 2,466 the number of cases this year and to 10,830 since 1984 when the virus was first detected in the country.
The new number of cases are 25 percent higher than the 253 recorded in September 2011.
Of the 316 cases, 10 were already reported as AIDS who were all males. The median age for them is 24 and all acquired the infection through sexual contract – six homosexual, one heterosexual and three bisexual.
The DOH said that males-having-sex-with-males were the “predominant type of sexual transmission". Some 97 percent of the cases or 306 are asymptomatic or still not manifesting symptoms at the time of reporting.
Of the recorded cases, sexual intercourse was the mode of transmission for 312 cases and needle sharing among injecting drug users for the rest.
