BACOLOD CITY -- The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has conducted an orientation for the presidents of 18 para-veterinarians (paravet) associations in Negros Occidental as part of the readiness plan against the avian flu virus.
Dr. Ryan Janoya, head of Animal Health and Meat Inspection Services Inspection Division, said the participants were oriented on bird flu, particularly on prevention of the virus from infecting poultry products.
During their meeting Tuesday afternoon, he said educating the paravets is part of the PVO’s preparedness plan to enable them to help spread the right information to the grassroots level.
“We want to make the community become more ready in dealing with this situation to be able to implement necessary measures immediately,” Janoya added.
As of Wednesday, average price of dressed chicken in Negros Occidental markets declined anew amid bird flu scare.
Janoya said the low demand of the commodity has pulled the prices down since the bird flu outbreak in Pampanga and in Nueva Ecija has sowed “fear” among consumers.
Latest weekly prevailing market price report, based on the August 15 to 21 monitoring, showed the current average price of dressed chicken in Negros Occidental is PHP155.11 per kilogram, lower by PHP1.46 per kilogram compared to the past week’s PHP156.57 per kilogram.
Janoya, however, said the price decrease is still within the normal range for dressed chicken.
Since Negros Occidental still has surplus in chicken supply, prices are expected to dip given the low demand.
“We reassure the Negrenses that our local stocks are free from avian influenza. Quarantine and other safety measures are in place,” Janoya added. (PNA)
