BACOLOD CITY -- The Police Regional Office (PRO-18) has been officially deactivated Friday following the abolition of the Negros Island Region (NIR), the former Region 18.
Chief Superintendent Edmund Gonzales, director of PRO-18, led the turn-over of personnel, equipment and documents to both the PRO-6 in Western Visayas and PRO-7 in Central Visayas in rites held at the Camp Alfredo Montelibano Sr. in this city.
The ceremony was witnessed by Director Camilo Cascolan, head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Directorate for Operations.
The deactivation included the lowering and encasing of the flag of the PRO-18.
Gonzales, who will return to the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame while waiting for his next assignment, said that PRO-18 had performed well, based on its accomplishments in decreasing crime volume and in the campaign against illegal drugs.
The displaced 11 senior superintendents have applied for vacancies in other regions, he said.
The PRO-18, formed in November 2015, turned over 5,387 policemen and staff to the two regional offices.
These included 3,495 personnel in Negros Occidental transferred to PRO-6, comprising 1,944 from Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office; 743 from Bacolod City Police Office; 274 from Regional Public Safety Battalion; 315 from Class Sinag-Lahi; and Class Masiklab, 219.
The total number is comprised of 158 police commissioned officers; 3,121 police non-commissioned officers; and 216 non-uniformed personnel.
The remaining 1,892 personnel were endorsed to the PRO-7.
A week earlier, the Bureau of Fire Protection-18 also shut down its operations after its personnel held their last day of office on September 29.
Senior Superintendent Fred Trajeras Jr., acting director of BFP-18, said they had cleared their office at the second floor of Gaisano Grand mall in this city.
The BFP-18 turned over 650 personnel to the regional offices in Western Visayas and Central Visayas, including 411 personnel for Region 6, and 239 for Region 7.
All the regional offices under the NIR are scheduled to shut down operations by October 9, or 60 days after President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order 38 abolishing the region. (PNA)
