SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique -- National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) Secretary Liza Maza on Monday told residents of Anini-y to develop their own livelihood to stop them from being dependent on the national government's support particularly the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
Maza, who led the unveiling of the Commemorative Stone Marker in Anini-y town, said 4Ps has helped reduce poverty in the municipality, but the people should have to strive hard to establish their own source of income and improve their local economy.
She said 4Ps is not a response for poverty eradication.
The NAPC secretary said the preparation of smoke fish, which was introduced by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), during its training to the coastal folks of Anini-y, as a possible livelihood that could grow into an industry.
She said slipper or footwear-making could be another livelihood to be pursued because of the abundance of the indigenous material or “banig” that could be used.
Meanwhile, Anini-y Mayor Maxfil Policar, in accepting the challenge of eradicating poverty by 2030, said that they will work hard to realize the goal.
He said that with the community fish landing center established by NAPC in Anini-y. fish vendors from his town no longer have to bring their catch to Iloilo, but rather expect vendors to now come to Anini-y to buy fish which could generate local income and thereby improve their economy.
Maza said the Commemorative Stone Marker unveiled on Monday signifies that the town is able to make a remarkable accomplishment of decreasing its poverty incidence by 26 percent.
She said Anini-y in 2009 then had a poverty incidence of 45 percent based on the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA). (PNA)
