Negros barangay officials urged to actively campaign against illegal drugs
BACOLOD CITY, June 28 (PNA) -- The Department of Interior and Local Government-Negros Island Region (DILG-NIR) has enjoined barangay officials to actively campaign against the proliferation of illegal drugs.
DILG-NIR Director Margie Biligan said they can take part in the campaign by organizing the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils (BADACs).
They should make the councils functional, she added.
Biligan acknowledged though that there are barangay leaders who are not supportive of the police anti-criminality campaign because they fear for their safety.
However, Biligan stressed that DILG has directives that define the roles of barangay officials, and these include cooperation with uniformed personnel.
The police needs the cooperation of barangay leaders and the community in their fight against drugs and criminality, she added.
Biligan said barangay officials should coordinate with the police if they are concerned with security and safety of their constituents.
Eradicating illegal drugs should have the cooperation of barangay officials and the community, the DILG official said
From January to May this year, a total of Php22.635 million worth of drugs were recovered by the police across the region.(PNA)
