ILOILO CITY -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has allocated about PHP17.82 million for the implementation of the government internship program (GIP) in Panay Island.
Amalia Judicpa, DOLE-Western Visayas’ labor information officer-designate, said Wednesday afternoon that the GIP, which was launched late in 2013, is “one of the strategies of the government to address the lack of experience among our graduates”.
It also aims to attract the “best and the brightest” to work in the government, said Judicpa.
From the second to the third quarter of this year, 997 individuals from Panay island were accommodated in 14 government offices. The figure is equivalent to 333.4 percent of their actual target.
During the internship, the trainees get to observe how the government works and the intricacies of being in it, Judicpa said, adding that they are expected to render services for three to six months.
GIP recipients receive a daily stipend equivalent to 75 percent of the prevailing regional minimum wage.
Judicpa said that those who are interested to avail of the program may visit their respective local government units and inquire if there are still available slots.
She said that based on feedback, trainees found the program “helpful” because they get the necessary experience and earn an income at the same time. (PNA)
