MMDA suspends number coding for provincial buses from Southern Luzon
MANILA, Jan 3 (PNA) -- The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is suspending the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVRP) or number coding scheme for provincial buses from Southern Luzon today and tomorrow (Jan. 4) in order to accommodate passengers returning to Metro Manila from the provinces for the holiday break.
MMDA General Manager Thomas Orbos said the suspension of the number coding will enable bus companies to utilize all available units to fetch passengers from the provinces in Southern Luzon back to Metro Manila.
“This way, we can help thousands of passengers to book their trip back to Metro Manila because the earlier returning trips had all already been fully-booked,†Orbos said.
The MMDA chief however explained that the lifting of the number coding scheme will still create traffic as more vehicles will be on the roads.
He appealed to motorists for patience and understanding for the duration of the number coding suspension as people need to return to their workplaces in Metro Manila as soon as possible.
Furthermore, the lack of Manila-bound provincial buses was compounded by the ongoing labor strike by a bus company that services Southern Luzon routes. Workers at the bus company have been on strike for almost a week now. (PNA)
