MMDA: Lesser trash collected from Traslacion 2017 routes
MANILA, Jan. 10 (PNA) -- The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has collected lesser trash from this year’s procession of the Black Nazarene.
MMDA was able to collect 34 truckloads of garbage or 202 tons (718.02 cubic meters) compared to 35 truckloads or 210 tons (739.20 cubic meters) hauled during last year’s Traslacion of the Black Nazarene.
“Lesser trash was collected as there were few street vendors along Roxas Boulevard for the duration of the Traslacion,†MMDA Parkway Clearing Group head Francis Martinez said in an interview with reporters Tuesday.
He said the MMDA is eyeing to ban street vendors along the route of the ‘Traslacion’ in the future to reduce garbage.
Personnel from the Traffic Discipline Office, Road Emergency Group, Public Safety Division, Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group and the Metro Parkways Clearing Group conducted a massive cleanup on the procession routes.
Millions of devotees participated in the procession of the image of the Black Nazarene which took 22 hours as it passed through the Quirino Grandstand early morning of January 9 to the Quiapo Church in Manila.
The route for the traslacion involved 25 streets, mostly in the vicinity of the basilica located along Quezon Boulevard in Manila. (PNA)
