Don't Give Toys As Christmas Gifts
« on: December 20, 2007, 03:34:07 AM »
By Katherine Adraneda
The Philippine Star

An environmental group warned the public yesterday against buying “toxic” toys that can expose children “to chemical and physical hazards, or promote hostility and violence.”

The Ecological Waste Coalition (EcoWaste) asked the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to conduct a nationwide inspection of retail outlets to ensure that only toys that pass quality and safety standards are sold in malls and other shopping centers.

EcoWaste backed the position of Senate President Manuel Villar Jr. and the Episcopal Commission on Youth of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines against toy guns.

“Toy guns work against the Christmas message of harmony and peace,” said Elsie Brandes-de Veyra of the EcoWaste Coalition.

“In lieu of bad toys that mimic violence in our troubled society, why not share books that teach and celebrate positive values such as respect, love and solidarity, including caring for the environment.

“Books, in English or Filipino, are our country’s best tool to halt the decline in the reading habits among Filipino children. Gift-givers can pick the best ones that will fit the age, reading abilities and interest level of the intended recipients.”

De Veyra said the government must assure Filipino consumers that tainted toys recalled from store shelves in the US and elsewhere would not find their way to the local market and cause serious harm to children.

... but didn't you love playing with your toy gun / catapult / other un-PC toy when you were a bata?  I know I did.

More importantly: These things are part of life and we should teach kids about them - not shield them in an unrealistic world where everything is peaceful and rosy.  For instance, make sure they know not to aim their catapult at a person or an animal(that you don't plan on eating).  That example is a useful lesson about responsibility and respect for other living things.

O please, kids love toys, don't deprive them just because they said so, it's a matter of choosing the right toys.

I have to admit that I still love to look at toys at the stores.  We were deprived when we were young because toys were the least of the concerns of my parents as we are more than a dozen.  I remember I was still young then, my cousin had a walking doll.  Oh, I was so wishing I had one like that.  I never did have though.  Now, my nieces love Barbie dolls, Barbie stickers, and other Barbie stuff.  I collect them and then I send to my nieces back home.  When I call them once they got the Barbie stuff, they sounded so elated I felt so touched!  Yes, it's more logical and practical to have pens and pencils and shorts and shirts but kids would still appreciate toys, no matter what.

yup you are right Ging.  i still include toys though, especially kanang mga stuffed toys like teddy bears kay ana man sad ko sauna, taman ra tawn sa tan aw sa tindahan kay dili lagi priority ang toys, pagkaon jud ang unahon ug palit.  anyway, mas daghan hinoon ang mga school supplies kaysa mga toys nga among ipadala sa mga kids sa among neighborhood.  lipay jud kaayo sila inigkadawat lagi.  maimagine naho tong ahong kabatan on sauna jud.
